Marie Gilot joined Knight Foundation in September 2012. She makes grants to institutions such as newsrooms, journalists' organizations, and journalism schools. 

Gilot is experienced in both journalism and nonprofit management. Most recently, she was the publisher of Newspaper Tree, a nonprofit journalism project in El Paso, Texas. She also worked as the director of nonprofit legal services provider Las Americas Immigrant Advocacy Center, and as the policy director for a community organizing group, the Border Network for Human Rights, both in El Paso.

Before venturing into the nonprofit sector, Marie was a reporter for the El Paso Times, a daily newspaper on the U.S.-Mexico border where, for nine years, she covered Juarez, Mexico, immigration and cross-border manufacturing, among other topics. She also has worked as a news assistant for the Wall Street Journal.

Gilot was born and raised in Paris, France. She has a bachelor's degree in communications from the City College of New York, a master's degree in political science from the University of Texas at El Paso, and a Master of Public Policy from Princeton University.
